Baselards started in the late 13thC and go through until the early 16thC, they were popular across a huge swathe of Europe from England through to Italy and Switzerland - which are probably where the forms are most associated though the methods of construction differed.

Baselards were not really a high status weapon and so they were usually fairly utilitarian in decoration and materials.
