Eating Knives

Most people carried a knife (and spoon) for eating with and all those other sundry uses a knife can be put to in a practical age. It was usually tied to the belt with a thong. The richer among us would have metal handle fittings the poorer would do without. The scabbards were almost always tooled as this cost relatively little. Choose a knife that suits what you do; thinner for carving food and more likely to be wealthier, broader for food and general jobs and more likely to be poorer. All my sheaths are lined (as they were) so that the blade is securely held and will not cut through. Circa 1250 – 1600.
